Greta Small competed in the World Cup at Soelden and when asked about her experience she said “The World Cup was tough. It was extremely rough and icy and lots of holes. I made two mistakes that cost me a lot of time and k(M)'s going onto the flat.”
This statement reinforces the importance of executing the game plan especially when the terrain goes from steep to flat, if you make a mistake at the bottom of the steep you will not have the speed on the flats and it is impossible to get it back. After sitting in second after the first run Ted Ligety (USA) did something similar before the flats and finished 10th. The take home is to ensure you understand the terrain changes, create a plan to allow for the most speed to be carried forward, and to execute the plan.
2015 Championship Events The 2015 season will attract the world to Vail/Beaver Creek for the World Ski Championships at the beginning of February. Australia traditionally has strong representation at this championship event and this year should be no different. The 2015 World Ski Championship selection criteria has been updated and can be found on the SSA website.
The target event for our top junior athletes is the World Junior Championships which; this year, will be held in Hafjell (NOR) in the middle of March. This will be a run-through opportunity for the race organisers as the following year they will host the Youth Olympic Games. The 2015 World Junior Ski Championships selection criteria has also been updated and can be found on the SSA website.
The qualification standards for both of these championships remain the same however an eligibility clause has been added which includes physical testing and reporting requirements which are in line with the National Alpine Committee commitment to create world class athletes who are skiers.
Several athletes have met automatic qualification standards in line with the selection criteria. Congratulations to the following athletes who will be representing Australia at their pinnacle events this season.
