Coming off a successful 2016/17 season where she placed 12th in the 1500m at the World Championships, Deanna Lockett is Australia’s most decorated female athlete in short track speed skating.
Lockett began her career as a nine-year-old in Brisbane to escape the heat and moved to Melbourne to train. Her break-out season came in 2011/12, securing two top-10 World Cup performances - seventh in the 1000m and tenth in the 1500m in Shanghai, China.
The following season 2012/13 was even more impressive, with a fourth in the 1000m at the World Cup in Shanghai, China and fifth in the 1500m at the World Cup in Nagoya, Japan. At the World Junior Championships in 2013, Lockett won bronze in the 1500m, placed sixth in the 500m and ninth in the 100m – resulting in an overall world junior fourth place ranking.
Lockett made her Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games, posting a strong performance in the 1000m event, where she placed ninth overall. The following season in 2014/15 she matched her previous best World Cup result of fourth in the 1500m in Shanghai, China.
2015/2016 was a frustrating year for Lockett, with illness (glandular fever) forcing her to miss the first four World Cup events of the season. She returned for the final two World Cup events and World Championships, with her best result being two 12th place finishes in a pair of 1500m events in Dresden, Germany.
Now based in Korea for training, Lockett stepped up the pace in 2016/17 with a string of top ten results for the 1500m in Salt Lake, Dresden, Shanghai.
Her best results came in the 1000m with an eighth in the Olympic Test Event in Gangneug, Korea and fourth in Dresden, Germany. She also recorded a personal best in the 500m at Shanghai in December 2016 of 44.666 and the month previously for the 1500m in Calgary Canada of 2.20.668.
Lockett was named as the Australian Flag Bearer for the opening ceremony at the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games.
Q & A
oudest moment: Competing in my first Olympics in 2014 and finishing 9th in the 1000M event
Best sporting memory from 2016/17 season: The first Asian Winter Games Australia has been a part of, and being the flag bearer.
I began my sport in 2006 when I was 9-years-old, I went to a public session and liked going fast, so decided to try speed skating.
When I am not in training or competing I am: eating, sleeping and preparing for my next training session. On weekends I like to see new places and hang out with my friends.
I enjoy my sport because it involves so many different aspects and we need to train in so many different ways to improve each of those aspects. For example agility, endurance, strength, speed.
