Greig claimed Silver in the 500m B Division event in Kazakhstan, gaining him qualification into the A Division this weekend’s World Cup and the World Championships in Gangneung, Korea, the venue for the 2018 Olympic Games.
The Australian will start his competition early Saturday morning (AEDT) in the A Division in front of the fanatical Dutch speed skating fans as he continues his climb up the world rankings.
Based in the Netherlands and part of Team Victorie – A Dutch pro team coached by fellow Australian Desly Hill, Greig is ranked 31st in the world for the 500m and 44th in the 1000m event, which he will also be competing in this weekend.
Jumping up to the A Division will no doubt be a tough test for Greig, however the reward will be worth it if he can find success, with more points up for grabs than in the B Division and a further boost up the World Cup Rankings.
The methodical, switched-on Aussie is enjoying better form since recovering from knee injuries last season.
His 500m race kicks off at 3:15am AEDT on Saturday and his 1000m event starts at 1:12am AEDT on Monday.
