Australia has recorded one of its best ever Winter Sport results at a World Junior Championship level, with two athletes in the top four in the Snowboard Cross event at Sierra Nevada, Spain.
Sixteen year old, Jarryd Hughes (NSW) has continued his recent excellent form winning the Silver medal, while fellow Australian Daniel Morrissy (VIC) also qualified for the medal round final of four athletes and finished the event in 4th place.
In the ladies event, Belle Brockhoff (VIC) made it through to the quarters finals and ended up in 9th place. Other Australian athletes who took part in finals action included NSWIS athlete Andy Fischer in 21st and Kieren Alkemade in 30th
Athletes who just missed out on qualifying for finals were Annabel Tudhope in 18th, Max Miller in 34th and Gregory Whitehead in 37th.
AIS Snowboard Head Coach Ben Wordsworth was impressed with the results of the young athletes.
“The event was heavily contested with all nations sending their top riders, some of them being from the World Cup. It was fantastic in the men’s final, to see two Aussies make up half of the final four”
“Jarryd Hughes put down some impressive runs today to move through to the final rounds and come within half a board length of beating the winner Alessandro Haemmerle of Austria. This just shows the level of riding that Jarryd is capable of as Alessandro competes full time on the World Cup circuit.”
“Daniel Morrissy was also impressive in his first ever final in FIS competition, showing some real talent riding from the front and also making passing moves when needed to advance through to the final round.”
“Belle Brockhoff showed promise with a strong qualifying result, but was unlucky to be eliminated in the first of the women’s heats and did not progress into the semi-finals.”
The halfpipe and slopestyle World Junior Championship events will take place over the next few days with Cameron Staveley, Lauren Staveley, Alex Fitch and Declan Vogel-Paul representing Australia.
