So that's what sat me down.”

Baff was left with an almost insurmountable mountain to climb – a four second handicap to start the final run.

“I was in the (starting) gate thinking, wow, four seconds is a really long time!” Baff, the women’s individual gold medallist said.

“But then as I dropped out of the gate, I knew that I was strong and my starts were way better today….

Anything's possible, and I'm going to trust that these three might have some contact lower down, and I want to be in that race if anything does happen. And I guess that was the mindset here.

“I don't ever give up, not until I cross that line,” the 23-year-old said.

Baff kept her hopes high for chasing them down, but with all riders staying on their feet, it was a gap too big for the Aussie to close, crossing the line in fourth.

“I know Josie could have pulled back half a second. She probably could have pulled back a second and a half. She's been riding so well, but four seconds is just slightly too much,” Lambert said.

Despite coming away from the Games empty-handed, the world number one kept his trademark cool-headed perspective.

“It's a tough place to be - fourth at the Olympics, but we're also at the Olympics and we're also in the final. There's only so many people that get to be on the podium. And I'm proud to have been in the final to begin with,” Lambert said.

Fellow Aussies Hughes and Clift had some courageous battles. In the opening race, Clift clawed back a 1.46 second deficit to finish second and the duo progressed to the semifinals.

Hughes finished the semifinal in third, 1.27 seconds behind the eventual gold medallists from Great Britain.

While Clift clawed back some time, the Aussies finished third (+0.87 seconds) and settled for a run in the small final where they both crossed the line in fourth (+2.64 seconds).

“Mimi rode incredibly. She brought us back from the death today, and the result we got is squarely on her,” Hughes said at the end of his fourth Games.

“Unfortunately, I couldn't match her level of riding today and how well she was doing it. And I think she deserved much better today.”

Twenty-one-year-old Clift said the Team had drawn inspiration from Baff’s gold medal and Australia’s historic feats at Milano Cortina.

“That’s bringing everyone’s vibes up… We want to put something down to match everyone else’s success,” Clift said.

That closes out the Milano Cortina Snowboard Cross competition. It is also Australia’s first women’s Snowboard Cross Olympic medal.

“It's very amazing. I would like to say that I can't believe it… but I kind of can,” Baff said.

“I feel like I deserve it. I've put in a lot of hard work, so I knew I could do it but to actually have the medal around my neck is very, very cool.

“There's been a lot of sacrifice, a lot of sweat, a lot of tears – probably not as much blood – and it's definitely something that I've been working towards for a very long time and my team has been helping me achieve that every step of the way,” the Jindabyne local said.

After placing 17th in the time trial, Baff had a nervous photo finish to progress through the quarterfinal. She pulled off a fantastic inside manouvre in the semifinal to go from third to first.

In the Big Final, the 2020 Youth Olympic Games gold medallist was up against stiff competition with the 2014 Olympic champion Eva Adamczykova (Czech Republic) and 2018 Olympic gold medallist Michela Moioli (Italy) both in the final, alongside the 2024 Youth Olympic champion, Noemie Wiedmar (Switzerland).

In the final, a mid-race move to take the lead over Wiedmar proved decisive as Baff held onto the lead for the reminder of the race to cross the finishing line in first place, with Adamczykova in second and Moioli in third.

After an uncharacteristic error in the time trial which saw Baff sitting in the middle of the pack, she knocked out a number of her toughest competitors on her journey to the Big Final.

“If you want to win, you have to beat everyone eventually anyway... so you have to be locked in from the get-go,” Baff said.

"After I went through that first heat, I guess I kind of relaxed a little bit, and each heat after that gets progressively easier for me – I get into that headspace and I activate a different part of myself – the real competitor in me comes out.”

Baff said seeing Cooper Woods' golden performance in the moguls the day before gave her extra motivation heading into her own event.

“I know him and his family super well and seeing that yesterday definitely sparked a little fire in me. He remained close behind the Italian for much of the race before using his drafting skills to move into the lead. He held that position to the finish in a tightly contested run, crossing the finish line in first just ahead of Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle in second and the USA’s Nathan Pare in third, with Sommarvia fourth.

The long-awaited win came in Lambert’s 75th career World Cup start across individual and team events. Before today, Lambert had recorded eight career podium finishes but had not yet stood on the top step.

In the women’s event, NSWIS teammate Mia Clift delivered her strongest performance of the season so far, narrowly missing the podium after finishing fourth in the big final. The French team secured the top two positions, with Julia Nirani‑Pereira taking the win and Chloe Trespeuch second, while Charlotte Bankes of Great Britain was third.

Josie Baff also rode well, progressing to the semifinals before a third‑place finish moved her into the small final to contest positions five through eight. She went on to win the small final, and fifth place overall.

“I came in today and yesterday with a pretty solid plan, and that was to not lead at the beginning, but finish first at the bottom, and I managed to execute that to perfection. I can’t believe it, I am so stocked,” said 28-year-old Lambert from Jindabyne in the NSW Snow Mountains.

When asked how important this victory is on the way to the Olympics and keep the momentum going:

“Of course it does, but it’s just important for me personally as an athlete who had been competing for so long, and this is my very first win and I am just so excited that it’s finally happened.”

Other Australian performances included Cam Bolton, who advanced to the quarterfinals and finished 16th, and James Johnstone, who placed 24th after reaching the round of 32. Abbey Wilson (31st), Jarryd Hughes (36th), and Declan Dent (51st) did not progress to finals.

Lambert’s victory elevates him to 220 points at the top of the World Cup standings, 59 points clear of Canada’s Eliot Grondin in second on 161. This was the16th World Cup podium of Baff’s career.

Mia Clift featured in the small final, finishing seventh, her best result so far this season.

In the men’s event, Lambert overcame a challenging opening round of qualifying, advancing via the second run in 23rd place. Once in finals, he delivered a strong display, winning his round of 32 quarter-final, and semi-final, to secure his place in the big final medal round.

Victory in the men’s big final went to Austria’s Jakob Dusek, Canada’s Eliot Grondin second, and Lambert was third , his eighth World Cup podium.

Lambert commented after the race:

“The course in China is very short, very sharp, things are coming at you quickly here and you’ve got to be ready. I came in today with a plan I wanted to execute, and I managed to execute that plan. said 28-year-old two-time Olympian.

“For sure this feels like the best form of my career, but Boardercross is a cruel sport, and your luck can change on a dime. Of course, this gives me confidence going into the Olympic Games, but I need to stay grounded in the reality that I’ve got to work for every inch on the track. No freebies.”

On wearing the yellow bib for the first time in his career, Lambert added:

“Yes, it absolutely does feel like an honour. Obviously just two races into the season anything can happen but for now I will savour the feeling, and to do it at the same time as Josie who was my neighbour for most of my childhood is a special privilege.”

Other Australian results included Cam Bolton and Abbey Wilson progressing to the quarterfinals, with Bolton finishing tenth and Wilson achieving a personal best of 16th. Jarryd Hughes placed 23rd in his return from injury, James Johnston was 24th, and Declan Dent placed 52nd, missing the finals. Unfortunately, Amber Essex did not compete after sustaining a knee injury in training and will undergo further assessment after returning to Australia.

After two World Cup events, Baff led the women’s standings with 140 points, 10 ahead of Italy’s Michela Moioli on 130. Her breakthrough moment came in 2016 with a World Cup victory in Baqueira Beret, Spain, the first ever by an Australian woman in the discipline. She later partnered with Jarryd Hughes to win the mixed team World Championship gold in 2021 at Idre Fjäll, Sweden. Brockhoff also finished in the top three of the World Cup standings three times, in 2016, 2017 and 2020.

In a statement shared with her community, the 33-year-old from Melbourne reflected on the significance of her journey.

“Snowboarding has given me so much over the years, but the one thing that I am most grateful for, has been the people. My family, friends, coaches, teammates, rivals and the supporters who pushed me to be better every single run. You’ve all given this sport its heart.

“For those who have been following, I have been rehabbing a complicated compound fracture in my wrist and a fractured L1 in the spine. I’ve rehabbed and trained hard all my life for many months but I know my body’s limits. It is with this and more than 20 years of snowboarding, that I know in my heart it is time to step away from competitive racing.

“I love snowboarding and I will still go riding, share the love of snowboarding with the next generation, and stay connected to this incredible community. But right now, the competitive chapter that has defined so much of my life has come to a close.”

OWIA CEO Geoff Lipshut praised Brockhoff’s exceptional contribution to Australian snowboarding and remarkable career.

“Belle is our pioneer Snowboard Cross woman, who showed Australian women can be the best in the world. The first female to win a World Cup medal, win a World Championship and her absolute fearlessness from day one when facing the best in the world.

“Belle is the trailblazer for the next groups of successful female snowboard cross athletes including Josie Baff, Amber Essex, Mia Clift and Abbey Wilson.

“Belle was one of those athletes who broke the mould and changed things around her. Her amazing fourth place at the 2022 Olympics was all her, the riding to get to the Olympic final was miraculous. The final did not work out or a medal, but an Olympic final and fourth place is a measure of Belle's competitiveness on every level.

“Belle has been an important OWIA athlete voice of a range of issues together with being a key partner athlete who always held up her end and executed her responsibilities.

“I wish Belle much success and happiness as she navigates her next step and stages of life.”

Belle Brockhoff celebrates winning World Championship Mixed Team Gold (top) & with Jarryd Hughes collecting their medals (bottom)

© GEPA pictures/ Daniel Goetzhaber

Double bronze for Australia in Cervinia World Cup Olympic season opener

https://www.owia.org/snowboard-cross-news/double-bronze-for-australia-in-cervinia-world-cup-olympic-season-opener

https://www.owia.org/snowboard-cross-news/double-bronze-for-australia-in-cervinia-world-cup-olympic-season-opener#comments

Abbey Wilson

Adam Lambert

Amber Essex

Cameron Bolton

Cameron Turner

Declan Dent

James Johnstone

Josie Baff

Mia Clift

NSWIS snowboarders have opened the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup season strongly, with Josie Baff and Adam Lambert claiming bronze medals in Cervinia, Italy, under clear skies and the backdrop of the iconic Matterhorn. Both riders from Jindabyne in the NSW Snowy Mountains delivered great riding throughout the day, with Baff securing her 15th career World Cup podium and Lambert earning his seventh. After qualifying in second place on Friday, Baff opened strongly, winning her quar [...]

After qualifying in second place on Friday, Baff opened strongly, winning her quarter-final before just edging out Austria’s Pia Zerkhold in a photo finish during the semi-final to advance to the big final.

In a very close medal race, victory went to France’s Lea Casta, with Italian Michela Moioli second 0.07 seconds behind and Baff third just 0.14 seconds off the win.

“I love the first race of the season, I am eager to get back racing and I want to beat all of the girls, so I think that’s a big motivating factor for me,” said 22-year-old Baff.

“I have been trying to work on qualifying higher, and I was really happy to come out with second yesterday and that meant I had my choice of gate all day in finals.

“My plan was to win the start section, but in the final I made a mistake in turn one and that cost me the lead, then I adapted pretty quick and try to get in the draft, and came down to all four us coming out of the second last turn so it was pretty wild and a good fight to the finish.”

Lambert impressed winning all of his early heats, culminating in the semi-final where he needed a brilliant late pass and his strong drafting technique to move from third to first. In the men’s big final, Lambert crossed the line in third behind French brothers Jonas and Aidan Chollet.

“Today was awesome, yesterday in qualifying the early runners can get a slower course and I made a mistake, so to be able to get the second run down (in 23rd), and then come out and prove to everyone that I was better than my number predicted, it’s awesome, I love it,” said 28-year-old Lambert.

“We were discussing last night in race strategy there was going to be a lot of draft out of turn five, and plenty of opportunities to gain speed, but overall it was pretty much decided at the finish line.”

Other Australians in action included NSWIS teammates Mia Clift and Cam Bolton, who reached the quarter-finals to finish ninth and 14th respectively. Missing the finals were Amber Essex (24th), James Johnstone (47th), Declan Dent (48th), Cameron Turner (52nd), and Abbey Wilson, who recorded a DNF in run two of qualifying.

The weekend racing in Cervinia concluded with the mixed team event, featuring Australia 1 (Lambert and Baff) and Australia 2 (Bolton and Clift).

Lambert and Baff progressed to the small final, crossing the line first to secure a fifth-place overall finish. Grondin finished in third and Leitner fourth.

“The men’s big final is always really competitive, I have had a few in my time, I would like to have more, but it’s always fun to race all day and not go out in the early rounds, so I am stoked,” said Lambert.

“I think tomorrow I can do what I did today, I don’t want to put any unnecessary pressure on myself, I feel if I race liked I raced today I have a good chance of doing it again, but anything can happen, it’s boarder cross.”

In the women’s event, French riders took out the top two places, with Julia Pereira de Sousa in first, Lea Casta second and Italian Michela Moioli in third.

Three-time Olympian Belle Brockhoff was in strong form qualifying in third place and made it through to the small-final. Unfortunately, Brockhoff suffered a crash and was taken away by the medical services team on course, ultimately finishing in eighth place. Brockhoff was moved to a hospital in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she is undergoing further assessment with the support of Australian team medical staff.

World number three Josie Baff also crashed in the first round of finals finishing ninth and suffering some bruising.
