The gold medal match proved just as dramatic, with Gill and Hewitt once again rallying in the final end to secure a 7–6 win and their second consecutive title.

An elated Gill reflected on the result:

“We’re excited to celebrate back-to-back wins here in Switzerland, wrapping up with a gold medal at the Mixed Doubles Curling event in Gstaad.

“It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks filled with great teamwork, consistency, and fantastic competition. With such a strong field in both events we knew we had to play our best, and we’re proud of how we’ve carried our momentum from one event to the next.

“Next up we’ll be competing in Geneva before heading home. Looking to finish our Swiss tour on a high note and more importantly feeling ready to roll in December for the Olympic Qualification Event!

The next event in Geneva is scheduled for October 28–30, followed by the final Olympic Qualification Event (OQE), which will determine the last two spots for the Milano-Cortina Games, taking place in Kelowna, Canada, from December 13 to 18.

The victory marks their third podium finish of the season for the 2022 Olympians, following silver medals at both the Colorado Cup and Stirling International.

Competing in a triple knockout format featuring some of the best teams in the world, Gill and Hewitt delivered dominant performances en route to the final:
  • Draw 1: Defeated Hoffmann/Dryburgh (SUI) 10–3
  • Draw 3: Defeated Kjaerland/Braenden (NOR) 12–6
  • Draw 5: Defeated Matsumura/Tanida (JPN) 6–2
  • Quarterfinal: Defeated Skaslien/Nedregotten (NOR) 10–4
  • Semifinal: Defeated Kaldvee/Lill (EST) 7–6

Gill and Hewitt will remain in Switzerland to compete in in Gstaad from November 21–23. They will also take part in a number of other events in the lead-in to the final Olympic Qualification Event (OQE) for Curling will take place in Kelowna, Canada, from December 13 to 18.

Dean Hewitt commented after the victory.

‘We’ve had a great start to the year and feel we’ve just about picked up from where we left off last year. We put in more training hours to start the year than we ever had in the past and emphasised training over games earlier. This has really fine tuned our technical aspects earlier in the season.”

‘It was exciting to win this event. We came into the event with two silvers so to take out the title feels extra special and a little bit of a relief to go that extra step!’

‘We’re feeling great on the ice. It was great to be in the same event as a lot of the teams who will be either at the OQE in Kelowna or already qualified for the Olympics. We’re looking forward to playing most of the same teams again starting Tuesday 21st in Gstaad, Switzerland.’

Australian Olympian Brendan Corey has kicked off his Olympic qualifying campaign with a series of impressive performances at the opening rounds of the ISU Short Track World Tour in Montreal.

Competing in back-to-back Olympic qualification events, Corey’s standout result came in the 1500m, where he reached the B Final in the first event (October 9–12), finishing 11th overall. He also placed 13th in the 1000m, advancing to the quarterfinals, and 35th in the 500m.

In the second Montreal event held this past weekend, Corey continued his strong form in the 1500 and 1000 metre distances. Corey reached the semi-final in the 1500 metres, ranked 16th overall. Corey also placed 16th in the 1000 metres advancing to the quarter-final stage and was 26th in the 500 metres.

Reflecting on his Olympic season preparation, Corey said:

“My preparation for the season was quite intense. I'm feeling stronger on the ice than ever before. I tend to perform better as the season progresses, and I’m keen to see what I can do as we get closer to the Games.”

“It’s Olympic season, so every team brings their best. Many have stepped up their game—there are no ‘easy’ races anymore. I need to stay focused from the preliminaries all the way to the final.”

Figure Skating: Silver medal and PB free dance for Harris and Chan in Trialeti Trophy

18/10/2025

Picture
Australian Ice Dance couple Holly Harris and Jason Chan have continued their strong recent form with another silver medal performance at the ISU Figure Skating Challenger Series Trialeti Trophy in Tbilisi, Georgia, their first medal at a Challenger series event.

Harris and Chan are on a high following their silver medal performance in September at the Olympic qualifying event in Beijing, China, where they secured a place for Australia in the Ice Dance at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Winter Games with career best scores.

In Tbilisi, Harris and Chan set a new personal best score of 110.96 points in the free dance, and 69.88 in the rhythm dance, putting them in second place overall on 180.84 points.

In first place was Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin of Georgia on 203.39 with French couple Loïcia Demougeot and Théo le Mercier in third on 178.09 points.

Harris and Chan commented after the event.

Harris: "We were aiming for a medal indeed, we don’t focus on it too much though. We ultimately just want to improve off the last competition and stay focused on ourselves. Today’s skate was pretty good, it was technically better than the Olympic qualifier.”

Chan: "After Worlds when we came so close to qualifying, we knew that we had to be ready really early for the Olympic season. So it was purely strategically for the September qualifier. We decided to keep the free dance something familiar so that we could really focus on the rhythm dance."

The next event on the schedule for Harris and Chan will be the ISU Challenger PGE Warsaw Cup in Poland, where they will also be joined by Hektor Giotopoulos Moore and Anastasiia Golubeva in the pairs event on November 19-23.

Giotopoulos Moore and Golubeva have been training this month at the O'Brien Icehouse in Melbourne’s Docklands.
