The Australian duo has now secured four podium finishes this season, two golds in Switzerland, along with silver medals at the Colorado Cup in the USA and the Stirling Invitational in Scotland.
Drawn in Group B for the round-robin phase, Gill and Hewitt posted a 3–2 win-loss record, advancing to the finals as the second-ranked team in their group.
They opened the playoffs with a dominant 9–2 victory over Estonia’s Kaldvee/Lill, followed by a hard-fought 8–6 win in the quarterfinals against Japan’s Matsumura/Tanida.
In the semi-final, the Australian’s won a close game, trailing heading into the last end but prevailed with s score of 8-7 over Westman/Ahlberg of Sweden.
The gold medal match proved just as dramatic, with Gill and Hewitt once again rallying in the final end to secure a 7–6 win and their second consecutive title.
An elated Gill reflected on the result:
“We’re excited to celebrate back-to-back wins here in Switzerland, wrapping up with a gold medal at the Mixed Doubles Curling event in Gstaad.
“It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks filled with great teamwork, consistency, and fantastic competition. With such a strong field in both events we knew we had to play our best, and we’re proud of how we’ve carried our momentum from one event to the next.
“Next up we’ll be competing in Geneva before heading home. Looking to finish our Swiss tour on a high note and more importantly feeling ready to roll in December for the Olympic Qualification Event!
The next event in Geneva is scheduled for October 28–30, followed by the final Olympic Qualification Event (OQE), which will determine the last two spots for the Milano-Cortina Games, taking place in Kelowna, Canada, from December 13 to 18.
