BIOGRAPHY![]() Born in Buenos Aires, James Matheson became used to international travel at a young age, with his family stationed in many cities around the world for his fathers work before being based in Sydney.
Matheson began freestyle skiing in 2004 training with the Perisher Winter Sports Club, and first competed internationally in 2010 on the Europa Cup tour at the age of 15 with the Australian Development Mogul Team and the New South Wales Institute of Sport. After a strong performance at the US Selections event in Copper Mountain, CO, USA, advancing to finals and finishing in 14th, Matheson qualified for his made his World Cup debut in Deer Valley, USA in January 2013 where he placed 30th. Matheson competed on the Nor-Am cup tour from 2013 to 2016, improving his results each year, with the highlight being a bronze medal at the Val St.Come event in Quebec, Canada. This result qualified him for his first full World Cup tour for the 2016/17 season. In his first World Cup season, Matheson’s finished the season strongly with a 21st place finish at the Olympic Test event in Phoenix Park, PyeongChang, and an 18th place performance the next week in Thaiwoo, China. Matheson also made his World Championship debut in Sierra Nevada, Spain, finishing 29th in moguls and 28th in dual moguls. Matheson qualified for his first Australian Olympic Team on the back of some promising results, which included a personal best World Cup placing of seventh in Thaiwoo, China, just one place off qualifying for his first Super Final. In PyeongChang, Matheson was the second best placed Australian male mogul skier at PyeongChang 2018. The Olympic rookie advanced from the second qualification run into the first final, but was two places shy of moving through to the second final, recording a best score of 73.96 in Final 1 to finish 14th overall. Matheson recorded two World Cup finals performances in the 2018/2019 World Cup season, with a ninth place finish in Calgary, Canada, and made his first ever super final with a new personal best in Thaiwoo, China, placing sixth. The highlight of Matheson’s 2020/2021 season was qualifying for finals in fifth place in Idre Fjall, Sweden, where he finished up in 16th. Matheson also competed in his third World Championships, with his best result coming in the dual moguls finishing in 25th place. Matheson will be competing in his second Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, and will be aiming to replicate his top-16 finals performance at the World Cup event in Mont Tremblant, Canada, in early January 2022. When not competing, Matheson has been very active completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney, and recording The Athlete Collective Podcast series. Haven't looked back since! Participation in other sports: Love to live an active lifestyle, which involves many other sports e.g. tennis, golf, surfing, cycling Favourite overseas competition and why: Deer Valley - it is a competition that has so much history to it, you really feel it when you're there. They have the biggest crowd, biggest course and put on an amazing show under the lights!
