BIOGRAPHY
Lars Young Vik is an Australian cross-country skier who has emerged as one of the nation’s most promising talents in Nordic skiing. Born in Oslo, Norway, to a Norwegian father and Australian mother, Young Vik grew up near the iconic Holmenkollen Ski Stadium and began skiing as a child. Initially focused on distance events, he transitioned to sprint disciplines in his late teens, showing rapid improvement and earning selection for the Australian national team.
His breakthrough came in 2021 when he made his World Cup debut in Ulricehamn, Sweden, and later represented Australia at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, finishing 55th in the men’s sprint free and 76th in the 15km classic.
Since his Olympic debut, Young Vik has steadily climbed the international rankings. In the 2024–25 season, he delivered career-best performances, including a 33rd-place finish in the freestyle sprint at the World Championships in Trondheim—Australia’s best sprint result at the event since 2005—and narrowly missed qualifying for the World Cup sprint finals in Lahti by just 0.02 seconds, finishing 31st. He also contributed to Australia’s team efforts with a 20th-place finish in the men’s team sprint and the relay at the World Championships. These results earned him recognition as Snow Australia’s Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year for 2025, highlighting his progress and consistency at the elite level.
Away from competition, he is completing a bachelor’s degree in economics and enjoys gaming and studying during downtime. His proudest moment remains being selected for the Australian Olympic team in 2022, and his focus now is firmly on Milano Cortina 2026.
Young Vik’s 2025–26 season opened in November at Ruka and Trondheim, where he recorded sprint results of 66th and 75th respectively, before continuing through December in Davos with a 55th-place finish in the sprint and 85th in the 10km freestyle. At the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Young Vik competed at his second Olympics and delivered his strongest performances in team and sprint events. He finished 51st in the individual sprint and 70th in the 10km interval start, while contributing to a 14th-place result in the team sprint, marking a competitive showing for the Australian, pairing with teammate Hugo Hinckfuss qualifying ninth overall to become the nation’s first-ever Olympic Team Sprint finalists. Following the Olympics, Young Vik continued through the final World Cup period with improved sprint results, including a 32nd-place finish in Lahti and a 44th-place result in the Lake Placid sprint. He also competed in distance events, finishing 74th in the 20km mass start at the World Cup final.
