Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA) have announced Australia’s biggest Park and Pipe series for 2017 kicks off this weekend on July 15 in Perisher, NSW with the Playstation Slopestyle.

Introduced in 2016, SSA Park and Pipe Series for skiing and snowboarding brings together five competitive events, which were previously conducted independently for many years.

The events support a comprehensive national competition pathway in which every athlete registered for the series will be added to the World Ranking lists via international sanctioning with the Association of Free Ski Professionals (AFP), the World Snowboard Tour (WST), and the International Ski Federation (FIS).

“With these events, athletes no longer need to travel to gain valuable competition experience.” SSA Park & Pipe Coordinator Richard Hegarty said.

“By achieving international event sanctioning, the level of quality and consistency can be applied across domestic events, thus attracting a larger pool of athlete talent.”

“The Series also attract big name international athletes and teams to Australia, improving the competition landscape and experience for all competitors,” he added.

Young athletes will be competing with the best in the world in their age groups, providing valuable experience in a stronger competition scene without the costs of travelling internationally.

“The sport becomes so much more interesting to the wider audience if it has a tour structure and world-wide ranking system,” Hegarty said.

The SSA Park & Pipe Series events:
  • July 15 - Playstation Slopestyle - Perisher
  • August 11-13 - Australian Junior Freeride Champs - Perisher
  • September 1 - Thredbo Slopestyle Series
  • September 2 - Thredbo Series Big Air
  • September 5-9 - Toyota One Hit Wonder – Thredbo.

The series will conclude in Thredbo with ‘One Hit Wonder’, which will also include Snowboard for the first time.
The One Hit Wonder event is an AFP Gold sanctioned event and International World Snowboard Tour event, boasting the largest Big Air jump anywhere in the world.
“It will be a display of the very best progressive freestyle you will ever see in a Big Air event,” Hegarty said.
Live Scoring will be available through SSA’s new Snowracer website (www.snowracer.com.au), allowing family and the public to follow the events and results live from anywhere in the world.
The SSA Park & Pipe Series events are now open for registration, with dates and locations listed below.

SSA Park & Pipe Series is sanctioned by:
  • AFP (Association of Freeski Professionals)
  • WST (World Snowboard Tour)
  • FIS (International Ski Federation).

Registration and Membership:
  • All Free Ski competitors need to be SSA licensed members of the AFP
  • All Snowboard competitors need to be licensed members of the WST
Athletes can sign up for registrations via the Ski & Snowboard Australia website
Registration information for all Australian snowsports events can be found at www.snowracer.com.au
